Microsoft released the Patch Tuesday Advanced Notification for the May 2010 edition of Patch Tuesday.  Administrators are getting a bit of a breather this month as Microsoft is planning on releasing only 2 new security bulletins.

  • Both bulletins are rated Critical
  • Two total vulnerabilities fixed (one in each bulletin)

One bulletin affects the Windows Operating System while the other bulletin affects Office and Visual Basic.  It is important to note that Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 are “not vulnerable in their default configurations".  In other words, an add-on or a service must be installed and enabled for the machine to be vulnerable.  More details around this will be known on patch Tuesday.

Affected Software:

  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 2003 (x86 and x64)
  • Windows Vista (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 2008 (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 7 (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 2008 R2
  • Office XP
  • Office 2003
  • Office 2007
  • Visual Basic

As expected, there is no planned bulletin for the recently published security advisory for SharePoint Server (983438).
