If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that the passing of time can be experienced in a whole new way. For example, we've almost made it to Thanksgiving, which means it's been approximately nine years since March. Kind of like when the weather forecast differentiates between what the temperature is and what it feels like.

But this post is not meant to be negative. Quite the opposite! We're focusing on what we're thankful for this season, and we've asked our Ivanti Insiders to tell us which Ivanti product they're most thankful for. Survey: 47% of IT Professionals Said Quality of User Experience Has Not Suffered Due to Remote Work

Over the summer, we surveyed nearly 400 IT professionals regarding their use of enterprise service management in their organizations. This post highlights some of the survey's key findings, including:

45% of IT professionals performed remote work run-throughs before the pandemic hit
29% of IT professionals reported they have been working on ESM initiatives for anywhere between three and five years

For many organizations, this preparation has paid off, with 61% of IT professionals claiming that they are consistently providing the same level of service working remotely, and 47% claiming that their quality of user experience has not suffered because of remote work.

Enterprise Service Management

The Ivanti study also assessed the value of enterprise service management (ESM) tools during the recent influx of remote workers.

ESM, which extends the use of IT service management (ITSM) processes to also address business-centric use cases in departments including HR, facilities and customer service, is proving to help organizations remain productive during this time of dramatic business change. The new study found that 65% of IT professionals say efficiency is ESM’s top benefit.

The cross departmental support of ESM contributes to its benefits. Nearly half (48%) of the survey respondents said ESM workflows crossed two departmental processes 25% of the time. In fact, when it comes to the number of non-IT services, workflows or requests IT helps with per quarter, respondents replied:

31% said 1-2 non-IT services, workflows or requests
30% said 3-5
17% said 6-10

This has resulted in business departments also seeing ESM’s value, with 64% finding efficiency to be the top benefit, followed by productivity (53%), improved experience (43%) and better alignment between department and end user expectation (42%).

When asked which departments IT professionals collaborate with the most on ESM initiatives, the survey found:

60% said Customer Service
53% said HR
40% said Facilities

The adoption of ESM isn’t new for most organizations. According to the survey, 29% of IT professionals reported they have been working on ESM initiatives for anywhere between three and five years, 34% reported the process has taken one to two years, and 23% said less than a year.

Since implementing their ESM program or solution, IT has realized valuable benefits, including:

Ivanti Insiders Spill the Tea on What They Like and Dislike About Their Managers

The Ivanti blog is no stranger to uncommon holidays. We’ve been known to write poems on World Poetry Day and share our favorite cup of joe on International Coffee Day.

Well, we’re at it again. Today is National Team Manager Day, and our Ivanti Insiders had plenty to say in response to the following questions. We have left the responses anonymous to protect the privacy of our Insiders.

What top three qualities do you find most beneficial in a manager?

Able to communicate effectively. Able to manage effectively. Able to call BS when seeing BS.

Awareness, willing to put the team first, and the desire to see that the team has what it needs to be successful.

Caring about their staff, recognizing the contributions of their staff, communication.

If you are a manager (or were a manager), what is the one thing you would do consistently to help motivate your team?

Allow group huddles to discuss issues from a different perspective.

Bonuses. Doesn't even have to be money and could just be simple things like snacks, drinks, or food.

Celebrate what's going well.

Challenge them.

Communicate regularly.

During one-on-one meetings (once a week), just briefly touch on their performance and then let the rest be their time to vent or share ideas. Basically give them an opportunity for my undivided attention to discuss whatever they want.

Encourage growth.

Encourage that their ideas are just as good as anyone else's and need to be reviewed and considered, not just taking orders from executives but being able to feed and grow our own initiatives.

Explain how the work we do impacts the bigger company goals and objectives.

Give appreciation to each one.

Give them the latitude they need to do their job.

Gotta have that recharge time. Fight for team events, lunches, activities, or whatever.

Incentivize training.

Provide encouragement and constructive feedback.

Recognize good work when you see it; don't just comment on the faults.

Recognize them for their achievements publicly and give them the opportunity to go to training to enhance skills.

Recognize when somebody goes the extra mile.

Say thanks and praise good work.

Stay positive.

Talk to them to see where their comfort line is, and how can I help them push past it to continue growing.

The only thing that really motivates me is cash! The rest is lip service.

What is one of your favorite team building activities, or one you’d like to have? Can be in-person or virtual.

A great Christmas party at the end of the year. We rent out part of Hard Rock and host the party. Lots of drawings so everyone goes home with something.

Anything. The point is to have them regularly and often. Camaraderie and culture are everything.

Axe-throwing is always fun with the team!

Bowling and karts are nice.

Charity project or activity.

Christmas party/white elephant exchange.

Collaboration. Other activities are a waste of time that could be used for getting work done.

Disaster recovery simulation.

Do a city trip.

Escape rooms.

Game where you have to help each other. Like an escape room.

Going for a beer after work.

I did an HDI session loooooooong ago around 2004 or 2005 and I always like the team building activity where one person was blindfolded and you had to lead them to different areas of the floor to pick things up. I felt like it really added a trust factor between teammates because you had to really listen and trust them to get the fastest time.

I like to go out of the office and go bowling.

I love our team meetings. We meet three times a week to go over what's happening, make sure everyone is supported, and on Friday we do Facetime Friday! No dress code required. I frequently show up in a hoodie and ponytail. It's just good to see their faces!

Just a team lunch.

Monthly lunch.

Off-site eating related events.

Sending each other memes in a team chat.

Team lunches.

We just talk. The work day doesn't have to be work all day. Creativity occurs in the subconscious very frequently, so it's good to discuss a business item and then let it stew in the back of your mind for a bit. But make sure to have a deadline in place to review and see if there are any solutions.

IT Frightmares: Ivanti Insiders Reveal Their Scariest Moments on the Job

When you think of scary moments on the job, you might picture physical job hazards such as those associated with police officers, construction workers, firefighters, or electricians. But job hazards come in all shapes and sizes.

Just because Ryan, the IT guy, works in a comfortable office with a nearby vending machine does not mean his job is stress-free.

Imagine it's summertime and you're an IT professional at a hospital. Suddenly the AC goes out in the server room. Not your problem, right? Actually, it is your problem, because the servers can't run in a 98-degree environment.

One by one, servers start shutting down. More than 40 servers are now offline, including the phone system. It also happens to be 4 a.m. on a Sunday, and even though you feel like going home and crawling back into bed, you're the person everyone is relying on to get the computer systems back up and running as soon as possible.

The pressure to "fix it" is compounded by the knowledge that if doctors and nurses can't access patient records, patients' lives could be at risk.

IT Frightmares

In the spirit of Halloween, we asked our Ivanti Insiders what their scariest, most adrenaline-charged moments have been on the job. The above scenario is a true story from one of the responses, and below are a few more. Be sure to learn about all of Ivanti's security solutions so that these frightmares don't happen to you!

We've also included what each Insider learned from their bone-chilling experience.

Issue: "UPS (uninterruptible power supply) caught fire in the network closet."

Fix: "Fire was contained to just that stack, but all switches, routers, and other peripherals had to be replaced."

Takeaway: "Automated management and status for all UPS going forward."

Issue: "We had built new Citrix PVS servers, and it looked liked everything was configured as should be, so we started to do a failover from the old to the new servers. But all the servers went down because of an old IP address in the configuration."

Fix: "With nerves of steel!"

Issue: "One of our user's accounts had been compromised and a hacker was sending malicious emails through the web mail portal."

Fix: "User's password was changed and all connections on the web mail portal were bounced in order to force all users currently logged in to have to log in again, cutting off the hacker's access."

Takeaway: "How to kill all the active sessions in the web mail portal by bouncing it."

Fix: "Called Microsoft and requested an escalation on the issue."

Takeaway: "External support contracts can be great, but they have to have the same urgency as you would if you were prioritizing the issue. Also, everyone loves to complain about receiving emails, but take it away and you cripple all of them."

Fix: "Disconnect from network and revert to older version."

Fix: "We caught it before a large number of machines executed the task, restored/recovered data for the rest. Fortunately, coworkers pitched in to help."

Ivanti Announces Strategic Acquisitions of MobileIron and Pulse Secure

In just 24 hours, tech bloggers and news sites everywhere have been sharing Ivanti's latest acquisition announcement. The news has been picked up by several publications including Redmond Magazine, MarketWatch, TechTarget, WSJ Pro Cybersecurity, and Channel Futures. And while we're delighted to be picked up by so many publications (seriously, we feel like the popular kid at school!), we're glad you've found yourself here on the Ivanti blog!

So here is everything you need to know about Ivanti's latest acquisitions.

Ivanti, backed by Clearlake Capital and TA Associates, has signed definitive agreements to acquire MobileIron, a leading provider of mobile-centric unified endpoint management solutions, and Pulse Secure, a leading provider of secure access and mobile security solutions. By acquiring these two companies, Ivanti will cement its leadership in unified endpoint management, zero trust security, and enterprise service management, which are critical in today’s remote work environment.

"By combining MobileIron and Pulse Secure with Ivanti... we now have the most comprehensive set of software solutions that address the growing market demand for the future of work, where working from anywhere on any device type is the new normal."

Under the terms of the agreement with MobileIron, Ivanti will acquire all outstanding shares of MobileIron common stock for a total value of approximately $872 million. MobileIron stockholders will receive $7.05 in cash per share, representing a 27% premium to the unaffected closing stock price as of September 24, 2020. MobileIron’s Board of Directors unanimously approved the deal and recommended that stockholders vote their shares in favor of the transaction.

Pulse Secure will be acquired from affiliates of Siris Capital Group, LLC (together, “Siris”). The terms of the Pulse Secure transaction were not disclosed.

In August, Ivanti announced a new strategic investment from TA Associates. The investment from TA Associates, along with new capital from Clearlake, will be used to accelerate Ivanti’s growth. Clearlake and TA partnered to fund the strategic acquisitions.

Ivanti Integrates Ivanti Neurons Platform with Splunk Security Operations Suite

Ivanti Integrates Ivanti Neurons Platform with Splunk Security Operations Suite

Today we announced that the Ivanti Neurons platform now integrates with the Splunk Security Operations Suite. Together, the solution enables organizations to realize an autonomous edge, which offers hyper-automated self-healing, self-securing and self-service capabilities. The solution is enabled by Ivanti’s integrations with Splunk Enterprise Security (SIEM) and Splunk Phantom (SOAR), two core components of the Splunk suite.

Qualys Integrates Ivanti Patch Management Into Qualys VMDR Platform

Our latest announcement comes in the form of another exciting partnership, this time with Qualys! A leading provider of disruptive cloud-based IT, security, and compliance solutions, Qualys has integrated Ivanti Patch Management technology into their Qualys VMDR (Vulnerability Management Detection Response) platform.

Qualys President and Chief Product Officer, Sumedh Thakarsaid, said the following:

The next phase of the integration will allow Qualys customers to patch MacOS systems, as well as over 70 third-party Mac applications, directly through Qualys VMDR.

Modernizing the Warehouse with Ivanti

Legacy warehouse picking processes were hampering innovation and efficiency for J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. Its reliance on older-generation mobile computers and paper picking processes was standing in the way of accelerating improvement in its warehousing and distribution processes.

To modernize its warehouse environment, J. J. Keller wanted to replace its aging Windows-based devices and make Android its standard picking platform. The company also wanted to couple the new Android systems with voice-enabled picking capabilities to boost picking productivity while improving both employee safety and efficiency.

J. J. Keller found the ideal solution from Ivanti. Using a combination of Ivanti Velocity and Ivanti Speakeasy, the company reduced product picking time while further improving an already notable delivery accuracy. Results

With Ivanti, employees at J. J. Keller have dramatically reduced redundancy and increased precautions for on-the-job safety. Keller to achieve—and exceed—its efficiency objectives.

Specific results of the Ivanti implementation include:

A reduction of half a second per pick. At 1,800 picks per day, resulted in a 10% efficiency savings.
Android migration and voice-enablement projects were easily deployed by J. J. Keller Order Management, minimizing the dependence on IT staff.
Training pickers, even those with no prior experience with Android devices, took just half the time required with the company’s previous legacy solution.
Now J. J. Keller is looking at how to leverage Ivanti Speakeasy voice automation to streamline other steps in the picking workflow, such as integrating cycle counts into the picking process.

"We had an ROI goal of about six to eight months, and we realized it in half the time—an actual ROI in just three to four months. We also had a goal of improving picking proficiency by 5%. But we doubled that with an actual efficiency gain of 10%," said Brian Pamer, Business Analyst, Order Management for J. J. Keller.

Easy migration to Android. Combined with voice, pickers can automate or eliminate redundant steps and improve data accuracy. J. J. Keller can also interface to its existing web-based warehouse systems without having to migrate or modify the enterprise application.

Survey: Remote Work Leads to Increase in Security Issues

Over the past several months, the world has changed as we know it. The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the way many companies do business, with more virtual events, video calls, and curbside pickups than ever before.

Although challenging at times—we miss attending live events and other social activities—this pandemic has forced many companies to think outside of the box. The traditional ways of doing business were no longer feasible or even legal in some cases. So the question became: How can we provide the same quality of service during these times of social distancing?

IT professionals have felt this shift perhaps more drastically than others, since they were called on practically overnight to provide IT support to a remote workforce.

Ivanti's most recent survey looks at the state of IT departments in the current remote work environment. Based on the responses of more than 1,600 IT professionals, it’s clear workloads have increased (63% reported), among many other things. Here are some key takeaways from the survey.

Security Issues

Overall, while things have gone well when transitioning to a remote work environment, the exception is an increase in security incidents. In fact, 66% have seen a rise in security issues in their expanded remote environment. The top issues include malicious emails (58%), risky, non-compliant employee behavior (45%), and an increase in software vulnerabilities (31%).

In regards to how many employees are now working remotely, 43% of professionals reported that 75% of their employees are now working remotely, and 35% said that 100% of their employees are now working remotely. An overwhelming 93% of respondents reported the number of remote workers has increased over the last few months. Reasons for the increase were driven by the following:

67% said a government mandate
63% said an executive decision
25% said due to a change in family situations
24% said an employee decision

Top Incidents and Requests

With all these changes, IT professionals are working hard to continue providing seamless support to employees. To cope with the shift to remote work, IT professionals had to increase VPN access to more employees (70%), set up and distribute extra devices (54%), and create more tutorials for employees (52%).

In addition to the above, 63% of IT professionals have reported a 37% increase in their IT workload since going remote, and 66% reported the number of incidents and requests submitted have increased by 39% due to more remote workers.

The top incidents/requests that have increased include:

74% VPN issues
56% video conferencing
48% bandwidth constraints
47% password resets
47% messaging issues
45% file/data access problems
45% new hardware requests

Top Collaboration Tools

A remote work environment is not complete without its collaboration tools. Many IT professionals reported being prepared for this type of remote work situation. In fact, 91% reported already having the collaboration infrastructure needed to support more employees going remote. The most popular collaboration tools? Microsoft Teams (69%), Office 365 (61%), and Zoom (43%).

As an IT organization, professionals report working with many vendors.
